Raji Y. M. Iraqi-Russian Relations: Baghdad Information Center for Cooperation and Coordination as a Model

Iraq has close relations with the Russian Federation, being one of the permanent members of
the Security Council, and it has special considerations regarding the non-occupation of Iraq
and its removal from the regional system. There are mutual economic and military interests,
and Iraq was among the countries that relied directly on Russian armaments in the period
between 1958 and 1990. The value of Iraq’s import of military equipment reached about $
30.5 billions, and the volume of commodity exchange between the two countries in 1989
reached more than two billion dollars. The number before the US invasion reached 7.73
billion dollars, which is 15% of the Iraqi commodity exchange as a whole. The share of
Russian companies in extracting Iraqi oil reached 40%, which is considered the main motive
around which Russian policy was centered on the Iraq-US crisis and the signs of the invasion
and occupation of Iraq in 2003. With the entry of the Islamic State to Iraq in 2014, Russia was
not far from the international coalition that was formed to fight this organization, because of
its relations with Iraq and Syria, which emerged through the formation of an information
center in Baghdad to provide support and advice to fight this organization.
